Exercise With Love
Does exercising with love matter when it comes to achieving and sustaining results?
I believe the answer is yes!
I have experienced trials and tribulations, and have tried many many different things, but there is still one thing that I love so much, that can always get me inspired and motivated even during tough times, and it's something I can never get enough of:
Dancing
I was inspired to write about this after I did a virtual dance class with one of my favorite choreographers who is based in NYC, and taking dance class for me is one of the things I miss most about living there. ( you can head to my IG page @trainxarielhoffman for the video. I learned it in 20min, so it’s pretty much just a rehearsal, but I was sweating believe it or not after just doing that much! )
I love all types of dance, but one style in particular really makes me feel like million bucks: and that is musical theater dance in the style of Bob Fosse. If you don’t know who he is, head to the Google or your favorite search engine, but basically, he was the Lin Manuel Miranda of his time, and revolutionized choreography and dance in a way that very few ever have or ever will.
Anyways, how does this apply to fitness? Well, I have found from working with clients that if they hate it, then there is no chance on earth that they will actually stick to it. One of the things that attributes to sustainable results is making sure that you are incorporating things that you really enjoy, and maybe even love! We all have some form of movement that we love, and I want you to connect to yours.
It goes without saying that in order to find the thing that you love, you will have to try many different things. Example, you are now incorporating yoga into your weekly routine, but due to the various types of yoga that as well as the numerous amount of instructors that are out there, not all yoga is the same and all should not be considered as equal. You will find some types of yoga more gratifying than others but that is up to you to find out which style, and which professionals work for you.
The reason that finding something you truly enjoy matters is because it will often times keep you motivated and on track at some point during your week. On the other hand, if you are doing things you hate, or the things that your friends are doing just for the heck of it, but that don’t really appeal to you, then inevitably, you may fall off the wagon, never to get back on, and then will have to start the process all over again. Now, if you are one of those who finds all exercise a chore, then this might be a bit more of a challenge for you to figure out, but of course there is still something out there for you to connect with.
BENEFITS
So what are the benefits of finding a form of workout/ exercise/ activity that you enjoy?
You will actually do it! And do it regularly which means that it is sustainable
It doesn’t feel like work or a chore because it’s fun
When you love something, your body releases the feel good hormones, dopamine and serotonin, and you can even get what’s called that “natural high” which can also contribute to fewer sugar cravings
You are more likely to find ways to do the things you love even through difficult times and unprecedented challenges
You will be leading by example for your family and friends
Builds confidence which usually translates into looking better on the outside because you will feel sexy and attractive
You will be happier
You will show improvement at this activity contributing to feeling accomplished
You will be more willing and able to help others in need or whom you love
Peace of mind, true mind body balance
All of the above contributes to results & sustainability. So find the thing that you love! and do the things that propel you forward. You may find yourself feeling very surprised at how this bleeds into other aspects of your health and wellness. Remember, there is always something you CAN do!
